Wild Ass Sanctuary|Established In 1972

Gujarat – the 9th most popular tourist place and the place with abundant wildlife sanctuaries, breathtaking views, unique architectures, and of course ‘The Great Rann of Kutch’, yes this is our ‘Vibrant Gujarat’.

I am not able to get over this phenomenal place and the wonderful memories which I will cherish forever. While I was going through the memory lane of my recent trip to ‘Gujarat’, this place – “Wild ass Sanctuary” located in Little Rann of Kutch made me nostalgic and my inner voice said ‘Take me back to experience the wildlife again.

We all know the traditional and cultural heritage of Gujarat, but do you know Gujarat is home to ‘Indian Wild Ass’, also called the Indian Onager, the subspecies of the onager native to Southern Asia.

Wild ass wildlife sanctuary located in Little Rann of Kutch Gujarat is spread over an area of 4954 Square kilometres, located at a distance of 130 km from Ahmedabad and 175 km from Rajkot. Gujarat tourism has made it easy to reach this place by bus.

Indian Wild ass sanctuary is home to many species, it has 4 species of amphibians,29 species of reptiles,12 snakes, and 1 crocodile, and the list goes on. Do you want to guess the number of bird nests here, it is an unbelievable number. Wild ass sanctuary has 70,000 – 75,000 bird nests.

Wild ass sanctuary is predominantly known for Wild ass popularly called ‘Ghudkur and Khur’ in the local Gujarati language. These species are currently listed as ‘Near Threatened’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, but the good news is the population of Wild ass has been increasing. According to the March 2020 census, the population of Wild Ass reached 6082. The population has been reduced in other parts of the world due to several reasons, Wild ass sanctuary at Little Rann of Kutch has the last refuges of Indian Wild Ass.

Jeep Safari at the Wildlife Sanctuary takes you on a tour around the entire area to spot the wildlife and birds.

The wading pink Flamingos, the great White Pelicans, a group of female asses breaking into a run on the landscape of the Wild ass sanctuary, are absolute bliss to watch, for all the passionate Wildlife photographers and twitchers, this place will be “Full of Life”.Besides, the amazing facts and beauty, this place has a threat due to Salt panning activity in the area.

The moment you land in Gujarat you feel the essence of the line ‘Khushbu Gujarat Ki’, the famous tagline that explains all about Gujarat tourism, it amazes you with the sustainable development, culture, and architecture. Visit this amazing place during October or November to experience the dense grasslands and you can also witness the foals playing around.
