Dance is the magical art that touches the soul. We often think dance is just about loud music and crazy moves but there is a much deeper perspective and it is one of the promising art forms.

There are numerous dance forms that are quite fascinating. Every dance form has a profound history and unique way of expressing emotions. Dance is a perfect concoction of agility and steadiness, the movement of the eyes. It needs hard work and perseverance to be a dancer.

When we talk about dance forms, we would be waiting to hear about Bharatanatyam, the purity of expression, exuberant in its own way. India is known for its exquisite classical dance performances.

Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest dance forms and it’s considered as the mother of all dances, originated at Tanjore, Tamil Nadu. Mudras play a huge role in Bharatanatyam dance, it has 55 root mudras that express events, ideas, and vivid actions during the performance.

Do you believe in the phrase “Eyes speak more than words”, you can merely experience this while watching the Bharatanatyam performance.

Kuchipudi is another heartfelt dance form that originated from Andhra Pradesh, a perfect blend of rhythm, control, and fluid movements. The sounds of the anklet bells (ghungroo) and the soothing music will make you feel absolutely blissful.

Each dance form has a way of expression, an intricate thought. Kathak dance is all about ‘Storytelling’ while performing. Detailed gestures and elaborate costumes of the characters along with body movements and playback music are the best experiences to watch.

Kathak is the central dance form of northern India mostly practiced in Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, as well as parts of eastern and western India.

Kathakali emerged from Kerala, popularly called god’s own country, and got prominent in every corner of India. Kathakali dance is mostly performed by male artists. In Kathakali, the Makeup of the artists plays a significant role, it is a differentiating factor between the characters of the act. The rhythm of the music in Kathakali dance is a combination of drums and metal gongs. Mohninnatyam is another dance form emanated from Kerala known for its feminine power and historical avatar.

India is predominantly known for classical dances. We do have different types of western dances which contribute significantly to the entertainment industry.

Ballroom dance is seen in many competitions and reality shows, popularly considered as a partnered dance in which one takes a lead role and the other follows. Waltz, Rumba are some of the famous ballroom dances.

Tribal and folk dances portray the culture and heritage of the rural areas in India. Jazz, Hip-Hop, Break dance, and salsa are some of the western dance forms which are occasionally performed in India.

For most of us, watching dance shows and classical performances gives a fulfilling experience, it’s a visual treat, and when your inner voice says dance like nobody’s watching, dance your heart out because it’s a way to feel more alive. So let’s keep dancing no matter what.
